Any advice for creating/moderatinng a forum for young teens?

I would like to provide some community features, some sort of moderated chat with maybe a homepage facility (maybe a blog) for a closed community of middle school students.

Does anybody have any experience or advice in setting this up in a 100% (OK, 99.9%) safe way? I'm interested in advice on a casual basis or people that can get more involved in selecting/implementing the system.

This would only be visible probably to our subscribed members but still, I would want to heavily moderate it.

The site is a K-8 online education site- Time4Learning.com - that is primarily (65%) homeschoolers.
