GigaTribe is fun and practical new software that allows you to share specific folders on your computer with friends (or professionals!) located anywhere there is an internet connection, and best of all, it's free! Basically, you select specific folders (and therefore files) on your computer which you want to share and then you invite your friends into your network. They can therefore download files (and even entire folders of files) onto their computer and you can do the same from the folders on their computer that they're willing to share. You can even use GigaTribe to access your computer from a remote location (work, etc...). It's 100% safe (128-bit blowfish encryption, no spyware/adware), you can transfer huge files (no-limit) and it's easy to set up. Furthermore, all exchanges are encrypted, so your exchanges remain confidential. For more info or to download free GigaTribe, go to www.gigatribe.com. I'm open to any feedback or questions you may have, just post them here or shoot me an email at john at gigatribe dot com.

If there is anyone that does read this posting, please I can’t stress enough how important it is to remember, everyone who wants to know how your personal information could ever get out. Well this is one of those ways. I am including a couple of links that you should all read before you’re ever considering this kind of an idea. Which by the way is one of the worst possible things you can do from a safety standpoint. Please visit the sites and see for yourself. Also just do a simple Google search and type in “Dangers of P2P connections”. If any of blog safety.com readers have any questions about where to find any other information about P2P file sharing and the dangers involved please before you act on your own, ask myself or any of the Administrators. If you want to keep your privacy safe and your computer safe, PLEASE avoid this type of file sharing at all costs. Here are just a few articles that need to be read before even thinking about any type of P2P file sharing. This one is by the University of Minnesota here is the link http://www1.umn.edu/oit/policies/P2P-staff.html Here is one from Web Conferencing Zone, this is a company that has many links for this type of file sharing software, and even they explain the dangers involved. But remember I am not saying that you should use their products; I just want you to see the problems caused by P2P. http://www.web-conferencing-zone.com/4075-free-file-sharing-programs.htm Here is another one who’s contributors are Department of Homeland Security, National Cyber Security Division her is the link for it http://www.msisac.org/awareness/news/2007-04.cfm I have said this in every article I have ever written, and in any lecture I have been a part of. We are all responsible for the protection for our personal information. And the best way to protect it is to put a stop to the ways it can get out. Safety starts in your own home with your decisions. Thanks so much, Terry. I'm going to leave this thread up because - despite the advertising and thanks to you - it does present both sides of a relevant argument.

I had a feeling you would say that. Here is the bottom line of the matter. In total I have total of 17 years experience with the Internet, and 14 years experience of Internet safety and of those 14 years 7 of those years were with a law enforcement unit dedicated to internet crimes and safety. So it would be a wise decision to just drop the matter. I have no intention of getting into a contest about this. You should do a great deal more research about P2P before being so ready to defend this P2P location that you seem to be putting so much energy into. And while this safety community does not belong to me and the decision does not rest with me, be assured that I am in total agreement with Anne in that your posting looks very much like an advertise. And a dangerous one at that. You have to remember that the readers here are for the most part concerned parents, and teens that are looking for safe and secure ways to use the resources of the Internet. And all of he users here do the very best that we can to teach them how to accomplish this. Your posting (and I do not mean to sound like I am trying to belittle or make you the bad guy in any way) is not a safe thing for most of the readers here to try. If you will do just a simple Google search for “Dangers of P2P connections” You will see a return of 230,000 returns. And while I am pretty sure that you are a good person, this is just not what these people need to read. If everyone on the Internet were an advanced enough user, the function of safety communities would be much easier. So if you really are at all concerned about the safety of teens, and adults as well, or if you happen to be a parent, then take some time and read some of the horrible things listed in the different areas of this community. Maybe after you have you may decide to remove the posting yourself. In the meantime while I mean no disrespect to you in any way, I am going to contact the administrators and ask that it be removed. I do hope that once you have had time to read many of the problems you will find on these types of safety communities you will do this on your own. Terry L. White

Terry, While I very much doubt you could crack GigaTribe, it's important to stress that GigaTribe users are only connected with and exchanging files with people they know, not strangers and not random people. It's no different than using Skype or MSN Messenger, you create a small private network of friends and stay within this circle, therefore the risk of being exposed to a malicious individual is eliminated. In the 2+ years that GigaTribe (and it's European version, TribalWeb) have been around we've never heard of any case of someone's system being pirated. Nevertheless, if you're convinced you can penetrate areas of my computer I've not marked as "shared", I'd be happy to try it out with you to see who is right about this. Feel free to email me (john at gigatribe.com) or just invite me from the software, my username is jcarricaburu (I'm online between 9:30AM-6PM French time). Cheers!

I agree with Anne here. I am sorry but there is no such thing as a 100 % safe P2P. Anne please forgive me for being so blunt in what I am about to say here. But folks if you do not believe what I am saying about this. I will go so far as to allow you to connect to my computer in a P2P format. In about 5 minutes I will have everything you have saved in your system. About 2 minutes after that I can totally shut down your system. Guys I can't stress enough how important it is to NEVER allow anyone to connect to your computer. The truths about these things are simple. 128-bit encryption has been outdated for several years now. And with a very simple program can be overcome in minutes, seconds even if you’re good enough. Again I am sorry if I sound defensive but this is exactly how your personal information gets out, and one of the biggest reasons that I still get involved in Internet safety. The only safe way to share a large file is to have your own Internet website. Post it there then allow it to be downloaded by others through a tight firewall and anti-virus program. And even then there are serious risks. NEVER, NEVER, allow anyone to connect to your computer. And to be even more honest, If it were up to me. This posting would be deleted. Sorry Anne. Thanks, Terry

Many P2P apps feature spyware or adware in them that can slow down your computer; GigaTribe is free of that kind of junk and only works within a small private network of friends and family, you don't have access to millions of files from millions of strangers. It's an invite-only sharing application where you decide who has access to what.

This post looks a lot like advertising, johnarama (see forum rule #7 here). People, if P2P file-sharing's happening at your house, be sure to see this news item on a new US gov't study about P2P risks to family PC security.
