Greetings Humans!

I am a Geek, Literally. I am employed in the Geek Squad Covert Operations department as a Covert Operator. I fix computers (mainly personal ones) over the internet.

One of the most common tasks is the Advanced Diagnostic and Repair. This is the Heavy hitting Operating System Re-Build that requires ample amounts of time, and Patience.

Why do these happen?

Because the amount of Malware on the Internet. Virii, Spyware, adware, Rogueware, all out to infiltrate, and decapitate your system security.

But the point of why I am here now is to aid you with the secure aspect of social networking sites. In particular, with Facebook.

If you have Questions RE-Security, or potential software risks of Facebook, plese ask. Also, I will be starting a facebookgroup for the purposes of networking "dirtside" and continuing the work of educating the populace as to the security strengths and weaknesses inherrent on Facebook.

Thank you all for taking the time to read this, and Do not be afraid to ask any questions.

The interesting this about the current world of Social Networking is the vast amount of User Generated Content.

On Facebook there are Applications you can load onto your profile. Similar things exist on Myspace as well as other sites.

The thing about these is there can be applications that compromise security. The bottom line on this note is to keep your eyes open. Investigate the people who are making the fantastic Gizmos you are loading to your profile. Find out if they make other applications. Find out if your friends are using similar extentions.

The reason that social networking websites are dangerouse is the demograpics. Large numbers of inexpirenced users medeling with a constantly adapting program. The online aspect adds t this. As well as the fact that Logins are typically tied to Emails. That is the really tough part.

We bank with our emails, we Apply for Jobs with our emails, and everything else.

So, Be careful. Read those damned boxes before clicking Download. Investigate before you hit enter. And watch where you are going. Too far off the beaten path lurk online thieves...And they want your money.

Hello, Agent Brooks. Great to have you with us. I hope you get some good questions. I do have one to kick things off....

I just read (in this article) that a library in South Carolina has banned social networking because of network security concerns. The library's IT folk said nothing had happened yet and they were being "proactive," but social sites had become "prime targets for malicious hackers and viruses."

I wonder if you agree with that. If so, is there anything social networkers can do to protect their computers from malware and other intrusions?

About the only things I've known to suggest to people so far is to be really careful about clicking on links in bulletins and comments and about new "log-in" forms that suddenly show up on their screens. Is that good advice? What else would you advise for social networking in general, not just Facebook? Facebook advice is most welcome too, of course, but not everybody here is a Facebook user. Many thanks,
Anne
