Need Hard Numbers on Kids and the Internet??

Here they are.

1. Check out the recent Pew Internet project by Amanda Lenhart et. al. @ http://www.pewinternet.org/ entitled Teens, Privacy & Online Social Networks.

2. Check out the Internet Caucus Advisory Committee discussion which occurred on May 3rd. http://www.netcaucus.org/events/2007/youth/

Great information which gives the real data - and suppresses the hype.

Glad you posted about them, JB. Some really great information is emerging. I was struck, when I listened to the video of Dr. Finkelhor's presentation at the May 3 Capitol Hill briefing you're referring to, to hear him say how concerned he is about the huge gap between public impressions about teen online victimization (teens not children, he stressed) and the reality. So I thought it'd be good to zoom in on that reality - the typical sexual exploitation case he described - and try to help spread the word, the facts the public really deserves to hear, by writing "Profile of a teen online victim," which I just posted on this forum.

Both the video (about 90 minutes long) and the full transcript - of Dr. Finkelhor's remarks, as well as the latest research from Pew, Michelle Ybarra (who has collaborated with Finkelhor on some studies), and danah boyd (who focuses less on numbers and more on in-depth qualitative research) - can be found at the link JB provides (here it is again). --
