A global competition for kids to help promote safe & positive usage of SN

One of the most important elements in any internet safety programme is to highlight creative and positive usage and find ways to reward and encourge young people who are using the Internet for good.

For the last 8 years Childnet International (the non-profit I run from London, England) has developed a successful international awards programme for young people called the "Childnet Academy" see www.childnetacademy.org.

We would love to now work with the SN industry to develop a similar monthly awards programme to find and reward young people who are developing SN sites which demonstrate creativity, original content, safe usage and have some social or educational benefit for other young people world-wide.

See outline of the competition at http://www.childnet-int.org/blogsafety/yp.html

There is so much that is positive about SN and blogging and we need to find examples of excellent, positive usage which will inspire other young people.

What do others think ?

I think this is a terrific idea. As you (Stephen) know, I was a judge in the previous Childnet programs and was very impressed by what kids around the world were doing with their websites. Web 2.0 takes this a step further and it would be great to honor kids' best practices with their social networking projects.
