One day Hopefully....
After researching everything i can find in current & proposed validation methods, i still feel like i know nothing more than when i started this search. Every route i follow on these matters leads back to the same old problems.
Are we ever going to make the internet a safe place for children and adults to coexist?
More attention need to be focused on preventing these networks from spiraling into no-mans land!. The moneymakers of Social Networking need to step up and flex some morals in what they do! The communities they spit out have no purpose other than to provide them with vast quantities of advertising revenue and pointless media. Targeting users with adverts that are becoming evermore intrusive! What kind of Community is that!?
Its time for someone to take on the task of 'Caring in the Community' and actually giving a damn about their users.
All that aside, Validation will not be achieved until the general population are comfortable that a lifelong personal ID is the way forward. This opens the factory doors, containing the rows and rows of pallets of can's of worms!
Any ideas that are about i would love to hear them! Maybe new technology has something to offer?

Star, if you're talking about filtering software, go to GetNetWise.org's searchable database of parental-controls software products and check the filtering option to get a list of products that block objectionable content of all sorts. These can be installed on whatever computer your child uses, but remember that they'll only block content when he or she is using that computer. Doesn't do much when the kid's online outside your home.

There is no way for the "internet" to verify age. But, I think parents can do things from their side by locking things down.

You're smart to set up your own account. Some parents have a rule that they're on their kids' friends list - would that rule work at your house? You might tell him that it is your job, as a parent, guardian, or relative who really loves him, to help him stay safe online and offline. If his profile has no privacy protections turned on, he's socializing in a public place, which is why it's perfectly ok for you to check up on him. Hope that helps. Glad to have others chime in, of course!
As for ages, there are plenty of people on MySpace who give a different age than their real one. It's kind of an honor system that works to the extent that people operate within the rules.
