Internt Safety Recommendations-Your Thoughts?

I am not sure I am posting this in the right area but I wanted a few other's reactions to an internet Safety presentation that I attended at my elementary school. My concern and reason for this post was the suggestion by the host, A Police Detective in my town that we mirror her actions which was to create a fake Facebook account as a teen and enter into our children's Facebook friends groups to stalk and see the content that was shared inside our child's profile.

I am a Marketing Consultant and a Mom and I do often speak on this subject in my community and my presentations follow the tone of "participation" to drive knowledge of these social networks. That this should be an honest "friending" to your children's network of Friends on Facebook and that this communication should between children and parents and be an honest one.

I don't think it is a good idea to create a fake account even with your child's permission because it teaches the child that frivolous use of facebook and other sites is somehow ok. If you are going to get your child's permission, why not ask for his/her password instead and monitor the account that way? You should also maximize your child's privacy settings, to block him/her from providing information to some unknown sites. I describe how to do this best in this blog post:

Hope you find it helpful!

Hi AnnMarie, and great question. I know several parents who have friended their children using a fake profile (all have gotten their child's OK first). Did the officer suggest parents discuss the idea with their son or daughter first?

I hope other parents will weigh in on the topic. Most people I talk to think it's just fine, but others think it's an invasion of the privacy of the child's friends (and, of course, the child).

What do you think?

Best,
Maureen
