My thirteen year old daughter would like to get a private blog for her eyes only. In your opinion, which blogging sites are the best as a private journal or diary, other than MySpace. Thanks!!

Hi, clarinette. Do you mean how's Blogger for kids' safety, or how is it for grownups to talk about it? Blogger has fairly minimal safety features, the most important being the ability to block or moderate people's comments in the blog. With the latter, you can see the comments before they go "public," which is a nice blog-management tool. Does that answer your question? All best,
Anne

We use imbee.com for class / subject blogs, creative writing, pod and video cast projects. I like it b/c any of the content developed in imbee / stays in imbee and can't be searched. Our kids like imbee b/c it's easy to use and it's ad free so they can enjoy collaborating without irritating product promotions. And it’s fun. Here is the link for teachers – www.imbee.com/teacher I had learned about imbee.com via David Warlick a well known ed tech advocate who has endorsed this site. To my knowledge imbee is the only social network that offers a free school program.

jazzypickles, you and she might take a look at LiveJournal or Xanga, both of which has good privacy controls. As Mark said, Imbee.com is another option, but generally targeting "tweens" (9-to-12-year-olds), which might be a little off-putting for your daughter. All best,
Anne

Thank you, Mark. How are you using it in the classroom? It would be fun to hear - maybe give some examples if you have time? Tx and all best,
Anne

Hi, I have two kids (9 and 11) who blog on www.imbee.com . What I like about this site is: it's free to use Decent third party content like National Geographic Built in parental controls so I can see what my kids are creating You can't search for profiles Blogs are private I am also a 5th grade school teacher and we're using imbee for our classroom blog. I hope this helps.

Hi A new blog site at www.groupintheloop.com has private blogging. Blog Entries are only visable to the people you add to your group. So if you don't want anyone to see your Blog, you just don't add anyone to your group. At some point, if your daughter wanted to publish her blog to some of her friends, she could just add them to her group. Her friends don't need to become members of the site to see her updates. A single email is sent to group members each day, with any updates from groups they belong too. If there are no updates, then there is no email. The site is set up so no-one even knows you exist as a member, unless you invite them to your group. There is no way for a stranger to request to be part of your group. -- Edited by agilmore at 11/07/2007 8:44 PM

I hope others weigh in on this one, but you might check out LiveJournal.com and Xanga.com, jazzypickles. They offer levels of privacy. To see how they work, you could create your own blog either by yourself or with your daughter (the latter could be a great mutual-learning opp) in about 5 min. and explore the privacy options. If you create your own just to learn all about a service, you can always delete it when finished. If you can't figure out how pretty darn quickly, most sites have Help sections. Hope that helps. All best,
Anne
