Yep. And guess what? I've played them for a very long time, and believe it or not, I haven't committed a massacre or any other violent crime. Video games don't cause that, I believe that it's simply used as a scapegoat (something has to be blamed, right?). If you ask me, the underlying cause is bullying. Kids need to learn that bullying is a part of life, and that everybody gets picked on at least once or twice.

ive read most of the previous posts in this thread and i agree/disagree with most of it O_o confused? lol well its a broad subject..enywho just wanted to say im not for excessively violent video games "manhunt" comes to mind however the reason im not fond of this genre? of game is because i think these games de-sensitize (sorry about my spelling) us to normally horrific despicable voilence..animated or not if we are subjected to or we indulge in this material be it movies, television shows or video games then surely it must impact on our perception of what is bad (for lack of a better term) basically im just saying if you indulge long enough the resoning for it becomes less..movies become more violent games become more horrific..any local news broadcasting station in any country in the world is a prime example..we are no longer shocked by the death of a person..we now ask how many died.."D"

It's disturbing to see that so many people completelt ar missing the target . Playing violent video games to unwind,to relax, are scary statements. Naturally - I am not opposed to the existence of video games - I just can not understand what important role violence itself plays. If you want my honest opinion heere : The right to play a violent video game is a result of the US curse : WE have the right to do what we want !Free choice matters more than anything else. You are even compelled to impose this freedom on countries that have a different view !

I think that your right and everyone dose get bullied once or twice but the school should have more than guidance counselors, like a good friend or a video game that you create -- Edited by chai at 10/05/2006 2:51 AM

See, one thing I don't get is that when an adult goes insane and starts killing people, nobody says "He watched Rambo before he did it!" And then Hilary Clinton doesn't start a moral crusade (temper tantrum) against movies, and they don't get banned. -- When did parents get so irresponsible as to have people do their parenting for them? Are they so spineless as to not be able to confront their kids and have a talk? Why is it that crooked politicians can manipulate fear to destroy our rights (patriot act) and ruin what separates this great country from the countless others that simply block people from things to teach them? How have we let this happen? -- Edited by son of liberty at 09/20/2006 9:55 PM

Good point, Rasma. That was a very responsible game seller. Wish they were all so conscientious, and it would help if more parents understood the ratings. Everybody, here, BTW, is the Ratings Guide at the Entertainment Software Rating Board site.

Well I have done a bit of reserch into this, and from what I have found is many peole belive that vidio games create violance because of the interaction, but I belive that the below posts have alot to do with the real problem I belive that if the esrb rateings were better enforced there would be no grounds for a problem The esrb rateings are more strict then movie rateings so if violance in games has anything to do with it, it is parents and vendors not the game players When I got my mom to buy a game that I was not old enough to purchase by the esrb rateings the vendor explained to my mom what was in it which I had already told her, but I know many vendors do not do this from other expriences of not following the esrb rateings but my mom felt I showed sufficent maturity. But then that also makes me a hypoctite but I feel that since my mom understood what was in it that made it diffrent from when the perent does not know what is in it or what the rateing means. so alot of it is also ignorance on the part of older people. -- -Rasma

Quite a while ago, now, I interviewed an avid gamer and aspiring game designer who was 19 at the time. Smart guy, Sean. I learned a lot from talking with him as well as a couple of 16-year-old gamers in different parts of the country. One thing that Sean said that made a lot of sense was that it's the kids already at risk for violent behavior who need to be watched for the impact violent videogame play might have on them (or people of any age, for that matter). Does this make sense to you?
You're right, Chantra, I think, that people are just concerned about the impact of violence wherever it appears. I think there are probably a couple of reasons why videogames are of slightly greater concern than movies - because the latter are more "immersive," or interactive, and because it's a newer phenomenon. A couple of US senators have actually gotten Congress to call for a major study on the impact of violent videogames before any legislation is passed, because we as a society simply don't know enough. This makes sense to me too, and I wish legislators would be as smart about social networking - get more research done, to lay a knowledge base before laws are passed. What do others think?

Violent video games is a common interest, as is violent movies, in people, particularly kids, that commit very violent crimes. Bullying is also a factor. Lax parenting, easy access to weapons, and lack of social support are all also factors. None of these should be taken out of context though. The scary thing is when you have a kid that has every single one of those factors, AND no other outlet for their rage. I dont know why banning video games seems to be a first step discussed every time something bad happens. I never could understand that when it's so obvious that this is only ONE factor of many.

why is it that kids are violent because they play violent videogames? what about violent movies? movies are more realistic then games considering they involve real people and the people actually look real instead of computer generated. have you ever noticed that videogames are rated harsher than movies? if a cutscene in a game shows.... "some skin" but nothing that could be considered pornagrphic it is instantly given a rating of M (mature) despite anything else that is in the game. Mature means that you must be 17 or + to buy it. but if you went to a movie theater and watched a scene in a movie in which 2 people involve them selves in "mild" sexual activity the movie is rated R. if a movie is rated R you have to be 17 or + to purchase tickets to see it. should a videogame show the same kind of "mild" sexual activity it would instantly be given the rating AO meaning Adults Only. if you are under 19 you can not purchase this game. so why are movies taken lightly and ignored when the subject of "do videogames make kids killers" comes up?
