Age Verification: More Harm Than Good

The call to force social-networking sites to verify users’ ages is increasing among some state attorneys general and parents. But ConnectSafely co-founder Anne Collier argues that age verification is a bad idea that will do more harm than good.

I also wanted to let everyone know there's an interesting blog post from Adam Thierer of the Progress & Freedom Foundation on age verification, complete with a podcast he did with other experts on the issue.

Happy Halloween!

I agree with Anne and FT that forcing age verification is not the solution to this problem. All the proposed solutions (creating IDs, sending letters to parents, asking to get parents' credit card etc.) have flaws in them. Moreover, putting more controls is going to allow mushrooming of another type of underground activities, like selling of stolen identity information to kids (in exchange for all kinds of things). This could lead to more frustration in teens and they would take out their frustration in other avenues.
