I run a missing children org, Kidsearch Network and we deal with safety issues as well. There is a great piece of software that will do everything you are talking about and more.

It logs everything your child does online.

It takes screencaps of activity and logs keystrokes.

It blocks all unwanted websites and is updated in real-time by the company that puts it out.

It blocks websites by keyword and other methods.

I don't know every feature by heart, but it is the best I've seen.

It's at http://www.onlinesafetyshield.com

Please do not consider this spam. I do not own the software, nor do I get a commission for recommending it.

My website, this is the spam part, is http://www.kidsearchnetwork.org where you will find a lot of safety information.

I'm Chris McElroy, President, Kidsearch Network.

I agree with Jeff, filtering software is not the best way to go about something like this. In my opinion, filtering software is somewhat out dated. Blocking software basically falls in to the same category. Offering a limited account is a good idea, some parents will even go as far as to remove the network cable from that computer thier children use.

If you have a teenager though, it might be more difficult as there is a good chance they are good with computers and work arounds on accounts, such as waiting for Mom or Dad to leave their account open and change their account from within the administrator account.

If that happens, I would go as far as creating a passowrd in the bios. When you do that, nobody can load the operating system (Windows etc..) without that passowrd.

Keeping kid off of Internet

The easiest way to keep your kid off the Internet during the day is to basically keep them off the computer. As Anne said, you really can't keep them off of other kid's computers or the library, but you don't need software to keep them off of yours.

Simply go to your control panel and password protect your account. Then create a limited account for your son, and password protect that as well. This way, your kid can't use the computer until you login. Furthermore when they surf on the Net, your computer should be safe, since with a limited account a user can't install programs.

Blocking InterNet Use

Evelisa:

There are several ways to block access on various levels.

First, You can totally block access to the PC, by setting a BIOS password. This is a hardware password that will prevent the PC from even being turned on. However, changing BIOS settings can be critical to your system. Someone knowledgeable should set up a SYSTEM and USER password for you.

Second, You can create Windows (I'm assuming you have Windows XP or at least 2000) Users, and require a password for them.

If you want to allow her to use the PC when you are not around, you can create two (2) Windows Users for her. Make sure both are NOT Windows Administrators, just a User.

One can be setup with InterNet connections (either Dial-up or Broadband connections). This password only you will know. And s second Windows User without InterNet access. She can have unrestricted access on this account.

Going further, you can use InterNet Explorer's content advisor to filter and restrict web sites. Or install other software to monitor and restrict access.

However, I'm not sure this is the answer. If you restrict her access at one place, she'll simply find another PC to use. Children, especially at 15, can be VERY resourceful. I’m sure she has access to her friend’s PCs, or at school or the library.

As Anne pointed out in her response to you, you need to talk WITH your daughter. Unless she is a willing participant you will only alienate her, and she will turn to others.

Good luck,
-Rusty

Evelise, it sounds like you're looking for time-out software that allows for Internet and computer use at specified times. You can search GetNetWise.org's software database for products like that. But keep those lines of communication open - it's so important if/when kids need a trusted adult to talk with and now that they can connect to the Net just about anywhere, including friends' houses, school, libraries, cafes....
