Internet Pornography

I am so devasted. My 13 year old son was viewing pornography online. He didn't even seem to be interested in girls yet. I had no idea this was going on. I feel that is inocence has been destroyed. Some of the sites he visted was so disgusting and vulgur! How can they allow this crap to be so easily accessed. Is there anyway to sue them. I am furious! I am also concerned it really dirtied his view of women and sexuality. I have tried to tell him that it is a beautiful thing between to married people. And that what you see on the internet is not normal. Are there any security that I can put online that will assure that they can't access it. The one's I have tried won't even let you access Wikepidia.

I suggest downloading this parental control software - http://www.sentryparentalcontrols.co.uk/

You can block pretty much anything you want so that your son will never have to see those sites. You have more freedom though so you can allow sites like wikipedia but still block pages within it (if you really want to).

First : A question :
Is pornography really THAT bad - or is it just intolerable because we think it is ?
Of course - porn in itself always is presenting a view on women that is extremely discriminating. Apart from that - these sites are no more "dangerous" than most sides kids visit.

I do not like pornography - and neither does my wife - and at school - we have the country's standard code : All sites with porn is blocked for students - and teachers.....
Last year, however, a girl came to me and asked about a website - why this was legal. The following evening we blocked the URL. Back home I got quite a shock watching the most grotesque videos - from a from a search engine.
Yahoo ,Google etc does not allow sexually explicit content, Facebook,Youtube etc - the same, - but http://www.altavista.com/video/default - makes it easy for any thirteen year old chlid to watch justabout anything. Since this is a searchengine - few parents even think of blocking access - and since few parents know how to check the log - - altavista has provided a "great" tool for kids .
Besides - contrary to what most parents believe -and there are few viruses presented on "serious" porn sites.
(The site collect information about the user and so on - but since the ultimate goal s to make money - few sites dare NOT to have their website scanned for viruses.)

Hi I know what your going through! That's how I got here. My ds went through the same thing. But, if you have Tools on your computer and you go to internet opions you can go to the security control and block those sites by name. I had to do it. It can take time, and you have to put a parental control on the computer. Your ds might not like it. But, it comes down to what you as a parent wants, not your ds. Sometimes you have to take control of the situation before it gets completely out of control. And, you have to talk to him about why you are doing this. Not do it and not explain it to him. Make it so he understands it's something that will protect him. And, that your only putting sites on that could harm him in the end. If you really think it would be better let him see the sites you are blocking. That way he will understand what you are doing. It's just a suggestion. But, I thought you could try that. But, talk to him, and diffently go to the site that Maureen told you about. Anne is one of the best. And, you will get great advise on how to talk to him about all of this. But, in the end it comes up to your relationship with your son. And, how you respond to him about it.

Welcome JeanM, I certainly understand your concern, but you’ll definitely want to check out "Kids’ Exposure to Porn: New Findings," written by ConnectSafely co-founder Anne Collier. In it Anne discusses a 12-month-long study by the University of New Hampshire’s Crimes Against Children Research Center that suggests teens’ exposure to online porn might have reached the point where it can be characterized as normal behavior among youth Internet users - especially teen boys. Anne also offers tips for preventing further exposure. I hope other parents will weigh in if they've had a similar experience.

Hope this helps,

Maureen
