a friend of mine has a 12 year old who we discovered last night has a myspace acct. She lectured her daughter about predators and not accepting people she doesnt know, privacy settings, pictures she can and cannot have on her site etc. Well we decided to set a dummy acct up and pose as a teenager to see if her daughter will follow the rules she has been given....with all the security now a days on the computer, I want to make sure we are allowed to do this, I cant see why we couldnt, but I just want to make sure. You never know nowadays.

I can see the point in having the fake account to check up on her. However, I think you need to get to the bottom of why she's on myspace. For example, are her close friends also on myspace and lying about their age? or is she just curious? More than likely a variety of reasons... However, as she's only 12 there's more than likley the social reason to it ie her friends are also on it because they can talk to older people. If that is the case then the parents all need to sit down and talk about it and put something else in place. I'd rather that she was not on there at such a young age where she is at risk from predators and bullying.

But thats the problem with online sitees, there is no way for them to know the person is lying about their age. And her mom can tell her she cant have a myspace, but kids these days will find a way. They can go to friends houses and get on the computer. Unfortunately its so hard to control, thats why we want to see if she is smart enough not to take the bait of a stranger that she thinks is her age.

Well, there's a reason why MySpace has that age restriction. It's just not a suitable location for a 12-year-old. If they figure it out, they'll delete her profile. -- Larry Co-director BlogSafety.com

First of all, for 12-year-old to have a MySpace account she would have had to lie about her age. MySpace is for people 14 and over so the parent should start by insisting she not have a MySpace account till she's 14. Second, there are now a lot of privacy tools in place. If you can't get into the kids' profile because it's private that means that other people can't get in as well. That's a good thing. The parent needs to talk with the child about the appropriate use of the Internet. Start by getting the 12 year old off MySpace till she's the right age, see if they can find more suitable social networking sites aimed at younger people (imbee, club penguin and others) and continue the discussion about Internet safety -- Larry Co-director BlogSafety.com
