recommendations for how to set up a safe blog for a 9 year old?

hi,
i am looking for sites that may be safe for an adult to set up a blog for a 9 year old. here's a brief summary of what we want to do and why:
my best friend/college roommate passed away this summer from cancer. she had many, many friends (in her own right as well as parents of her kids' friends) who were close to the kids and kept an eye on them when my friend wasn't able to.
now that my friend has passed, her kids are becoming less and less connected with those of us who were part of her mom's support circle.
i promised my friend (as did several others) that i would stay connected to the kids, but that is hard to do because they're not old enough to be making their own plans yet, and communication with the husband is inconsistent at best.
in talking with the nanny, we had the idea that maybe we could set up some kind of blog for the 9 year old daughter so that she could be in communication with the "aunties" who want to stay connected to her. maybe the blog could include her calendar so we could know what her schedule was and make dates with her through the nanny... perhaps the daughter could post her thoughts/feelings about her mom's passing, or even just her musings about school, ballet, etc.
the nanny would be the administrator of the site, and we'd want something that could only be accessed by invitation, so that we could totally control who has access to it.
it doesn't need to be super techy, but it would be cool if the 9 year old could choose the background colors, fonts, etc. i would bet she'd want to be able to post pics, but not much more than that.
any ideas for how to do this? recommendations of safe blog sites that could be used for this purpose? all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks!
