I think you should be fine having a Webcam chat through MSN instant messenger. It's very easy to use, and if you make a phone call to the relatives (your son or daughter) you'll probly be able to have them walk you through it. I wish you the best in being able to see your family, I know how hard it is for them to be away. ;P

That is good advice but with any website there's always flaws. For example.. photobucket.com one of the bigger of the websites, where you can assign a password, lets you see direct links. Alot of people didn't know this. Also, people are able to exploit the website, like many others.. and reset passwords so others can view.

An issue with webcams and younger kids is not the webcam that takes the picture, but the video itself. Parents that shoot kids at the pool, or birthday party, or whatever... then post the video on the web for grandparents or other relatives to view from a distance is a risk. With photo and video pages now becoming like social networking pages (flickr, etc) the predators and pedophiles are scouring the web for content. ADVICE: ONLY use sites that password your video and still photo content. Do NOT use the social sites like flickr, or yahoo pictures without passwording your pictures online. If you use sites like kodak or Apple's .mac service, you can easily password your pages. NEVER use youtube or other "social" video sites for your young video clips.

While nothing is impossible, the chances of anyone intercepting a private video exchange between two responsible parties is extremely low. It would require them to first target you and second use sophisticated technology to grab the data -- kind of like taping your phone. In your case, I don't see any measurable risk. The real risk is if one of the people decides to capture the data and share it. There are cases of teen girls exchanging videos with boyfriends only to find out too late that their "boyfriend" recorded the session and posted it after the two of them broke up. I don't think hat's a risk you need to worry about. There are also cases of teens using their webcams to pose for others online but again that's not something that you need to be concerned about with a very young child. -- Larry Co-director BlogSafety.com

I guess the parents real concern is not me or the child...but others being able to see the child "over the airwaves" so to speak. Their comment was " We would never put our sons picture on the internet"...Valid or not?? Cherie

I think that there are some issues regarding teenagers and web cams but I can't imagine a two year old being able to use it, let alone use a PC. In my opinion, children under about 7 or 8 shouldn't use any PC without an adult in attendance, especially if the PC is connected to the Internet. But I just can't imagine what damage a two year old could do with a web cam. -- Larry Co-director BlogSafety.com

I am a Gramma with a 2 yr old I seldom get to visit. I wondered if me having a cam & them having a cam was dangerous to the 2 yr old. Thanks for any advice! Cherie

Vernonia1, not knowing all the circumstances, I would just say that, generally, unsupervised use of Webcams by kids is not a good idea (e.g., see this about widely publicized investigative piece in the New York Times about a year ago). Having said that, if they're used as part of extended-family communications and when caregivers are around, they can be wonderful! Hope that helps,
Anne
