Hey! I'm new here and my college ENGL 101 class has assigned us to do a mini thesis on teens safety on myspace. I've found a lot of good sources including this site but I'd like to just hear some people's personal opinions (not to be actually used in my paper but to help me form my own opinion). I, personally, am a teenager (I'm 15) and have a myspace page and I haven't encountered any of the negative aspects of myspace. I'd really appreciate anyone's thoughts on the subject because I'm still not sure whether I'm going to be taking the affirmative or negative view. Thanks in advance! ~Heidi

>After which I canceled > because I was invited to join a "Girl on Girl" group > and sent dirty emails. Like said before, you can delete emails. And they simple invited you to a girl on girl group. They didn't force it on you. I'm sure you could've denied the invitation and went upon your way. Dirty emails? You mean like with a sexual content? -- Watch, watch me disappearing completely/In the dream of destruction and rebirth, this poem will be sung/In this fragmented sky, aaah, dozing, you had searched for the feeling that was wished for. It's safe if teens follow the "rules" for online safety. That is so important no matter what your age. No last names, phone numbers, addresses (including pictures with your house address number in the background!). I've actually seen a profile where a girl had her dorm room number and the college she went to on her public profile, as well as her cell phone number. Not safe.

Just as said as long as your smart myspace is safe. There are many people watching over it to make sure its safe. Myspace is safe as long as you let it to be safe I have been opn it for quite a while and had no problems. ~WRRY -- Edited by theebayk1d at 11/05/2006 8:38 PM

You can delete emails. -- When did parents get so irresponsible as to have people do their parenting for them? Are they so spineless as to not be able to confront their kids and have a talk? Why is it that crooked politicians can manipulate fear to destroy our rights (patriot act) and ruin what separates this great country from the countless others that simply block people from things to teach them? How have we let this happen?

Yes, I had a myspace once. After which I canceled because I was invited to join a "Girl on Girl" group and sent dirty emails. And yes, my profile was set to private. -- I'm always in the mood for a little jazz. MSU music performance major Just loving life and music. -- Edited by jazzmusician at 11/04/2006 2:52 PM

MySpace, per se, isn't dangerous. It's how some people use it that's dangerous. Think of MySpace as a very busy street with sidewalks. If you walk down the sidewalk it's very unlikely (though not completely impossible) that you will be hit by one of those "predatory" cars speeding down the street. But if you step into the street you're probably going to get hurt. So, smart walkers stay on the sidewalk. Being smart on MySpace means not responding to people who make unwanted sexual comments, keeping your personal information private and never getting together with people you meet online. -- Larry Co-director BlogSafety.com

Then personally you are wrong. Tell me, how exacly is it unsafe if your profile is on private? Only people you want to can see your profile. As long as you are not a complete moron, you are perfectly fine. You obvisously don't have a myspace or even know what it is. It's not dangerous, period. -- When did parents get so irresponsible as to have people do their parenting for them? Are they so spineless as to not be able to confront their kids and have a talk? All you have to do is not be stupid. One shouldn't give out personal info or talk to strangers online, just as one shouldn't get into a stranger's car. -- When did parents get so irresponsible as to have people do their parenting for them? Well myspace is safe for teens if they are smart when they use it just like adults if an adult is stupid with myspace they can get hurt or killed just like if a teen is stupid with myspace, I myself use myspace and I have a pic of me that unless you know me you won't beable to tell is me, I have the city and state I live in but no adress and I have my first name but not my last, and my first name is not listed in the phone book last time I looked, and even if it was it would be hard to find. -- -Rasma
