Hey folks, Like you all I am encountering more and more fake, phony, imposter, etc., profiles being created on MySpace and Facebook. I am an attorney who provides legal assistance to artists and entertainers and I have about had it with not having a a direct contact name, number, hell, even email, to a 'real' human being--with regard to concerns requiring IMMEDIATE attention. Anyone have any leads? (Especially for Facebook, they seem to have nothing but 'Report' e-forms to fill out, but the irony is that you need an account to send a report. I do not have an account, yet I should still be able to contact the company! Right?) Best, W

Good inputs, Anne. If anyone reads about this site in particular, it has been in some litigious issues surrounding people trying to sue the Company vice the anonymous poster. While I understand the Company position, my question is with regard to "how" the Company responds to requests to remove the postings. Ultimately, the Company CAN shut down the URL in question--but will they? Try this example (real life) on for size: A client of mine is in the process of interviewing for a position with an employer. You are well aware, I'm sure, that nowadays many employers (w/o telling you) conduct 'ego searches' on the internet--meaning, typing a job candidate's name into a search engine and see what pops up! Now, in my present case, this DDHG Forum post shows as a return on most search engines. As the commentary posted is highly incriminating, yet unrelated to a professional background, a request for it be taken down--so that my client can look for a job without this bias influence--is REASONABLE, no?

I hope someone here has info on this one, but there are so many of these sites, and under the radar where attorneys general are concerned. There are many degrees of corporate responsibility on the social Web (the FTC has just been charged by a newly passed federal law with establishing a working group to develop best practices), and it will be interesting to hear how responsive this site is to your abuse report. I'm sorry to say we don't have a relationship with this company. Good luck!

Right, Anne. It just helped to have ANOTHER email to send a complaint to. Ok, so without taking up space with a new thread, I am curious if anyone has experience (or a contact) at this other 'social' group known as: DontDateHimGirl (DDHG). It is some sort of public group where woman put up photos and commentary about men they feel (subjectively) should not be dating other women? Um, ok(?) So, I have a separate client who contacted me about one of these pages, but DDHG seems to operate the same way Facebook does; i.e., a member can 'Report' using a boilerplate template email to the company, but there is no other contact information for someone like myself to go direct with admin, legal, or other.

Wasn't anything we did, TheWGroup (accurate instructions do help, of course), but glad that got resolved. The tough thing about the social Web is that no "solution" can really be permanent. The only real barrier to someone completely annoying putting up another fake profile in minutes is that it takes a *little* bit of effort and sometimes s/he gets tired of the effort or moves on to the next victim, thank goodness. Let's hope it sticks. All best,
Anne

First off, I do not know who Atul2 is, but they are either mimicking the Post, or are pushing the wrong buttons to Reply(?) Second, and more importantly, THANK YOU Anne for your advice and (somewhat) direct contact information to Facebook. Within four hours of emailing them, the phony page was taken down. This made my client ecstatic, considering she is a Facebook member and sent no fewer than 5 Reports--to no avail.

Thanks for posting, W. We sent your post to our contact at Facebook, and the answer's pasted below (it looks like the only option for reporting abuse of your clients "in bulk" is through abuse[at]facebook.com):
"Users and non-users alike can report imposter profiles through our Help page here. There’s an 'I need to report a fake profile or impostor profile on Facebook' link with a contact form that routes to our User Operations group. They can also write an email to either privacy@facebook.com or abuse@facebook.com with detailed information about the fake.
"Finally, for Facebook users, there’s a report link located at the bottom of every profile page. Unfortunately, because of the tremendous number of requests we receive from users, we do not offer phone support at this time."
All best,
Anne
