A new study says that only 7% of online teens have ever had an interaction with a stranger that made them feel scared or uncomfortable, though 32% have been contacted by someone with no connection to them or any of their friends.
Is anyone surprised by those numbers? (Read more about the study by Pew Internet & American Life here.

Strange that so - is that some kind of tendency to play with a fire or just a curiosity?

Hi Maureen, Yes I am actually surprised by those numbers, I feel from my experience that they are low. I feel more of our children are contacted in some fashion (often they don't even know they are being contacted by an adult) and in some way. Vigilance by us as parents is important and as you and so many on this forum have expressed talking to your children and not "at" them. Just my 2 cents... Steve

Ok here I go again, but I saw a commercial for the Dr. Phil show. I'm packing to move, and I see a lot of commercial because I pack from my scooter chair and take a lot of breaks. But anyway, the one that is coming up is about a girl that met a man on a Myspace account. Her mother trusted her completely, and now the girl has ran away with this man to the Middle East, or somewhere like that. I think that's coming up next week. But, it will be interesting to watch and see just how easily these men can influence young girls over the internet to run away with them to another country. And, to see how out of the loop the mother was. From what I saw on the commerical the mother had no idea her daughter was doing this. And, she "never dreamed my daughter would do such a stupid thing!" But, I still remember when I was a teenager and the crush I had on a older man. If he would have asked me to run away with him, I would have been gone in a flash. Are mothers living with blinders on, or don't they remember when they were teenagers? I mean that was back in the 60's and he drove a Camero and had long hair, and great tee shirts. By the way, he was also a teacher at my high school. I'm so glad he didn't ask me I would never had made it to Woodstock, and met my husband. But, I think I'll take time out to watch that Dr. Phil show because he's going to hit on some of the really hard topics of preditors on line. And, he's even sending a team to try and find the girl. It kind of sounds like "To Catch a Prditor", but with Dr. Phil. Who knew. Well just a news flash from me. But, you might want to watch it. Take care out there, and be safe, but have fun lifes too short.
