Myspace Imposter ID.... please help :( please

Hello.

I read several of Maureen's suggestions and I contaced myspace at imposterreport@myspace.com and reported an abuse. Someone stole my picture and made a myspace page of me. I emailed myspace a picture of me holding a sign with my name, email address, imposter myspace id, and a drivers license.

I have received threats from whoever has created this account. I do not even have a myspace account. I was told by a family member that it was there. What else can I do to help remove this account: http://www.myspace.com/tiffanybuot

I am furious!!

Tiffany, congrats on having the profile taken down. I don't think the credit goes to us - MySpace works hard to keep up with requests like this. With more than 100 million registered users, it usually takes a bit of time. People need to keep in mind, though, that getting an abusive profile removed is not necessarily the end of a problem. Determined harassers can put new ones up faster than MySpace can take them down. Social-Web issues are more about human behavior than technology or Web services.

As for your question, I think you need to work with your local police. MySpace will work with them. All best,
Anne

Thank you Anne. I filed a report at our local PD. I emailed MySpace with the report number and contact information of the officer who took the report. Will MySpace contact the PD or should I go back to the PD and ask them to contact MySpace? From your above response, it sounds like the PD handles this, but I just want to clarify.

MySpace finally did remove the site, just 6 days after the ititial email asking for the removal of the imposter profile.

Thank you again for your assistance with this investigation.

Tiffany, you need to contact your local police department first to see if they'll open an investigation. They may do so if you show them evidence of illegal behavior such as physical threats. That would probably mean a print out of the threatening comments in a profile, email, IM etc. Tell them the URL of the page too so they can check it out themselves. If they decide to take the case, they'll contact MySpace themselves. MySpace has a dedicated 800 number for law enforcement that it doesn't provide to anyone but law enforcement (including us!). I hope that helps. All best,
Anne

Hello again.

Well, I have decided to obtain a court order and contact the police department about this imposter profile and the threats I have received. What contact information do I need to give the police from MySpace so they can contact them about finding out the ip address and name of the person who did this (phone, email, address, etc.)? I will need to provide MySpace contact information so they can follow up with them. Do you have information on how to obtain a court order also?

Thank you for your help in this investigation.

Tiffany, I'm sorry to hear about the harassment you're dealing with. By federal law, MySpace can't reveal the ID of one user to another to any other person or organization without a subpoena or other court document. When people are harassed online, the only permanent solution is whatever the people involved can work out in real life, unfortunately. MySpace gets a lot of salutes and abuse reports and works hard to keep up with them (it takes time to get an imposter profile taken down usually because of sheer nos.), but that's all MySpace can do: take down a profile. It can't stop a determined harasser or bully from creating a new one and continuing the harassment. It also can't act as law enforcement and take any other action. If the person is physically threatening you, you can call the police and try to get their help. I hope this helps a little bit. Maureen, our community manager, may have something to add. Good luck,
Anne

Is there any way you can find the ip address on which this account was made from and find out who did this? If this same ip address was used for another myspace account, can they also remove that profile? I, not only want my (imposter profile) removed, but I want who ever did this to also be caught and the appropriate actions taken.
