Myspace Issue: Imposter profile.

I work in a retail stores and I came across what seemed to be a profile that one of my co-workers/friends had. It didn't have much, it looked like someone started the profile and didn't finish. It had her name, age and where she lived. I saw her a few days later and told her about the profile and she said that she did not make it. She is pretty upset that someone set up a fake account to try to pretend to be her. She asked me to help in removing it. I tried contacting Customer Service about 5 times and have not recieved a reponse and the profile is still up. I contacted the owner of Myspace, Tom, and he isn't doing anything about the profile that isn't hers. This is a safety issue and we would like this matter resolved as soon as possible. The profile is here: myspace.com/123625774.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

Yaritza, our MySpace contact's response is that "for better or worse, there are many legitimate profiles that look like the imposter profile" you're reporting about. So you need to send the URL and a salute (here's their info on how) to imposterreport@myspace.com). This is their only way of determining that it's definitely an imposter. Good luck,
Anne

Hi Anne and Terry,

I just wanted to let you know that the imposter profile has not been deleted yet, and I still haven't received any e-mails from MySpace yet. Have a great week!

Re: Myspace Issue: Imposter profile....Please help... :(

Hi,
I have posted before on this and no one has replied, not a big deal. I understand that there are MANY people out there with the same problem I am having. It seems like someone has created an imposter profile on myspace. I think I know who it is but there is really nothing I can do about it without proof. The page has been there since October of last year. My boyfriend happened to search me and found the page (what a fight!). I have a "Real" page and it's set on Private, so I was disturbed when he called me to tell me that he found me and asked why I didn't tell him about it and asked about my sexual preference (the person stated I was bi-sexual). I have two daughters (15 &7) and I don't like the image this person is trying to portray of me. Anyhow, I have written to myspace (customer service), have complied with all their requests and the page is still there. I don't understand why I have to take a picture of myself with a sign but I did so anyway. If you compare the pages, the real and the imposter, you can tell that they are completely opposites. This person hacked into my AOL Pictures and used some personal and private pictures of me that I wouldn't post. The URL for that page is http://www.myspace.com/yaritzab and the friend ID is :112452939. If there is anything that you can do, please let me know. MUCH APPRECIATED!!!

pdol85, do give it a few days. Several times I've passed stuff along and situations were resolved before the info got to our contact. As for IP addresses, they're not very reliable identifiers - less so even than email addresses - and there are many ways to mask them. So, yes, I believe most social sites just delete imposter profiles - doesn't work to block by IP address. Good luck,
Anne

Hi,
I am going to let Anne answer that because I really do not know the answer. But just so you know, even if they do ban the ip#. For someone that knows a little about computers changing you're ip# is not hard at all. But to answer you're question I really don't know.

Thank you very much Terry for all of your help, as well as your tips. I can understand that with Anne running a website, she has a lot of requests to fulfill for people, and if MySpace can take care of this within the next three days, then that would be wonderful. It is scary that someone obtained that information, but also I consider the fact that everything bit of information for someone can be found on someone if they do the right searches, or have the right programs. It's really a scary thought.

I do have a question though, and I'm not sure if you can answer this or not, but when MySpace bans an imposter profile, do they just delete the profile, or ban the IP address attached to the profile to prevent the person from making another profile. This person also made a profile on Facebook, and Facebook took care of the profile right away, but the person made another again, and Facebook deleted that right away and it hasn't been back since.

But, with this imposter profile on MySpace, it's also a learning experience that I really need to be more cautious with the information that I give or display on the internet. My profiles were once public, giving people information such as where I worked, where I went/go to school, friends, etc. I guess I didn't know how stupid it was to have that information displayed publicly until this happened of course.

Hi,
No I did not at all mean that you needed to open a MySpace account, and you are right you do not have to be a member of MySpace. And I am sorry if I worded that wrong.
Unless you really want your own MySpace account then there is no reason to start an account. But still with all the new programming going on with MySpace right now it may take a little longer than usual. And like I said if in the next couple of days it is still there I am sure Anne will be happy to forward the information. Many of us here just try to help take some of the workload off of Anne by trying using channels first.
I am an ex-Police officer and the thing that bothers me the most about imposter profiles is how the person that made the imposter account got enough of you’re personal information, pictures, and who all of your friends are to be able to do it. So chances are this may be a person that you know. So always please take great care in protecting all personal information. Even things as simple as keeping your password to log onto the computer private. I change every password I have at the very least once a week. And that is about 20 different passwords. But in the end it is well worth the time it takes to do it. And I do not tell even my closest friends or family any of my passwords. I just wanted to add that to maybe help you notice some simple things that are easily overlooked.
Give it another day or two and see if they get it corrected. I will log into my MySpace account and use the imposter option as well, that may help a little.

Thank you Terry for your insight.

However, I am not a MySpace user. This fake profile was brought to my attention through friends and family, and I have read that I could still send a salute with a valid e-mail address, which I have done several times. Could this be what is delaying the profile to be deleted? Would you suggest that I create a MySpace profile?

I am sorry to hear that. Just a couple of other points, make sure that you have a profile with a valid email address. Double check you email address on you're MySpace profile. And one thing I forgot to mention is with all the programming changes on MySpace right now it may take a few extra days.
Also as Anne said in her posting if after a few days you still have no response and the profile is still there she will forward it to a MySpace comtact. It's always a good idea to try everything possible and allow enough time for them to correct the problem. Even if it seems like too much time. If we do that then we save Anne from sending as many requests. But as she said if not in the next few days then just re-post and I am more than sure she will be glad to help out.

Hi Terry and Anne,

Those were the first steps that I did, and have done several times throughout the week. I still haven't received a response from MySpace. I have also sent salutes to the appropiate MySpace e-mail addresses and have not received anything within the past or five days. I'm a little dumbfounded on how to further the complaints.

Thank you,

Patrick

pdol85, could you do what Terry suggests - file an abuse report directly from the imposter profile page - and if you don't get results within 3 days, try us again? It's best if people exhaust MySpace channels first.

Thank you, Terry!

Hi guys,
Sorry to hear about the this problem. I did just want to add that currently MySpace is adding programming that will once it is all complete help to stop this problem. One thing you can do that I have alredy tried and it works. Go to the false page, at the bottom of the page you will see a link "Report Abuse" click that link. It will open a new window and give you some options, mark the one Imposter Profile. Then just follow the instructions. I helped a friend do that just a week ago and in about 3 days the profile had been deleted.
Also I am sure Anne can be of much help. I did just want to let everyone know that MySpace is cracking down of this much faster now.
