After being buried getting this site up and working on our upcoming book (MySpace Unraveled)I finally am around other people -- normal people who aren't knee deep in this web/social networking thing. I'm at Asilomar (near Monterrey, CA) for my wife's family reunion. Last night when someone asked me what I'm up to I mentioned that I'm co-writing (with Anne Collier) a book about MySpace and the response was "MySpace -- that's a bad place." Another person said "MySpace is evil." In both cases, they had heard all the negative publicity and were left with an impression that MySpace is an inherently dangerous place. When I talked with them for awhile they began to reconsider and admit that it's only dangerous if you use it in a dangerous manner, but it's still interesting to see how at least a few people are reacting to all the media around this service. Welcome concerned mom, I’m so sorry this is happening and would like to help get the fake profile removed. Send the profile URL to admin@connectsafely.org (plus a bit about what's going on) and I’ll pass your message along to our contact at MySpace. And while I can’t speak for Larry, I think by “dangerous” he meant physical harm (See “profile of an online victim” for more). But I know Larry would agree that any type of bullying (which includes these disgusting fake profiles) is a very serious problem, and one that parents, social-Web users, child safety experts, psychologists, police and educators need to attack head on. (In fact, check out a recent piece by Larry, who’s also a CBS technology analyst, on the subject.) Thanks for posting, Maureen ~ Maureen Kochan ConnectSafely forum manager

To say that MySpace is only dangerous when you "you use it in a dangerous manner" is a joke. I have a 13 year old daughter. Guess what? Someone created a MySpace using her picture. They proceeded to post that she like giving [obscenity deleted] and basketball. They then posted two FILTHY blogs on that same page. They have been doing this since November 07 and we found out just this week. We have asked MySpace to remove it and they have not even responded. We are talking about a 13 year old CHILD. Anyone can create anything at anytime about anyone else. Unless Myspace implements an "Authentication" application, this will continue to happen. They even gave my daughter's home city out (we live in a very small town). There are grown men replying to this fake page. It has been humilating and scary for all of us. So no, you do not have to use it dangerously for it to be dangerous. Somone else can do that for you. Post was edited by: Maureen
